Payton Mabrey, senior at Centralia High School (CHS), was awarded April student of the month. Dr. Matt Smith, CHS Principal, thought Mabrey would be a great candidate for this award because of his display of character.
At a recent track meet, Dr. Smith saw first hand Mabrey displaying positive personal qualities.
“At the track meet the other night, I watched a lot of kids running around socializing, kind of fooling around in between their events. For about an hour during the latter stages of the meet, Payton sat with a coach and had a deep conversation about technique and how he could make some adjustments to improve his shot put performance. It struck me how mature, calm, modest and focused Payton was. He has excelled at a lot of things in his time here at CHS, but never seeks to be the center of attention. He just consistently goes about his business making great contributions to his team and our school, and always treats people around him with respect. Although his quiet personality doesn't ever seek the spotlight, he is in fact a great student and great young man who is an example to all.”
“It feels good to be the student of the month, to know that teachers see me as a good person,” said Mabrey.
Mabrey is involved in football, wrestling and track. After high school Mabrey plans to go to Moberly Area Community College and study to become a physical education teacher.
