As winter arrives and frost sets in on the windows, students at Centralia High School eagerly await the annual Winterwarming festivities. Guided by the student council, the theme, “Game On” promises a week filled with spirited dress-up days, friendly competitions and school-wide joy. The inspiration behind the theme came from a conversation between student council advisors Mrs. Kim Morris and Mrs. Amy Hempen. Morris recalls, “The theme 'Game On' was something that just kind of happened when Mrs. Hempen and I were talking. I said something about a game show and she just grabbed onto it.” The student council leaders, composed of seniors Harper Forshee (President), Katie Carrico (Vice President), Regan Anderson (Secretary) and Olivia Adams (Historian), embraced the idea and created a lineup of engaging dress-up days, each made to reflect popular board games.
Each day consisted of the themes “Sweet Dreams” inspired by Candyland, Battleship with camouflage attire, “Fake an Injury Day” to correlate with Operation, Uno with each grade wearing different colors and “Game On” where students wear their Winterwarming attire or spirit wear. They also had games that took place before school, such as Sharks and Minnows, dodgeball and Hantis. On Thursday February 8, at the end of the school day, different grades, clubs and Winterwarming royalty candidates participated in a shopping cart parade that they had to decorate and present for their peers. However, in the background of this and the entire week, there were playing cards hidden around the high school where, if found, you could redeem for a candybar of your choice. The peak of Winterwarming besides the game was the pep assembly, which took place on February 9. The high school drumline, as with every pep assembly, started it off by calling everyone to the gym where the first event started. The king candidates had to do their corresponding queen candidate’s makeup and run back and forth to get supplies. After showing off their new looks, the following activities commenced, such as two people trying to guess what word is on the card based on descriptions, a class versus class game of Twister and finally a word from our coaches. The Winterwarming basketball game consisted of CHS varsity girls and boys playing against Palmyra, which ended in a girls’ victory. And finally, the Winterwarming dance that had snacks, drinks and a DJ to play fun dancing songs to conclude this year’s Winterwarming season. Comments are closed.
