By: Mackenzie McCollum, Contributing Writer Mayor Chris Cox came to visit Centralia High School (CHS) on November 2nd to give a presentation to the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). Mayor Cox came to speak about his role in the local government, how the Centralia government works and how the students can become active members in the government.
FBLA chose the mayor to speak due to his being “an esteemed figure in our community,” says Susanna Nix, FBLA secretary. Mayor Cox talked about the terms and lengths of his time in office, his duties as mayor, the City Board and how it is managed. The mayor instilled confidence in each of the FBLA members to reassure them they are in control of themselves and all of their actions, and to commit to each action they would like to take. Mayor Cox repeated how important it is to educate yourself on local government and to participate in local elections. This was the biggest take away for Nix. Elijah Hill, FBLA president, and Amy Pendergrast, FBLA Vice President of Communications, both agreed that their favorite part of the mayor’s speech was his example of overcoming hardships in his personal life and how those problems affect his role as mayor. This was their favorite part because it was inspiring to them. Mayor Cox also came to help FBLA work towards earning a Champion Chapter form for their chapter. There are many things on the checklist a chapter must do to earn this title. Having a guest speaker is just one of the items they have to complete. When all criteria is met the chapter receives points from the state to become a gold status chapter. This is a very important and prestigious title a chapter can earn in FBLA. Comments are closed.
