Written by: Cameron Barnett, Contributing writer Centralia High School(CHS) held the annual sports signing day on May 5th in the high school gymnasium. Parents, family and students were able to watch in the stands while the students signed for their college. Athletic Director Scott Humphrey stated, “This day is important because it shows all the hard work these students have put into their craft.”
CHS had 10 student athletes that participated in signing day. This year's athletes are: Ethan Adams(Missouri Valley, baseball), Mackenzie Adkisson(Culver Stockton, softball), Ellie Berendzen(Columbia College, track and field), Jozelyn Bostick(Missouri Valley, XC, basketball, track), Brayden Dubes(Missouri Valley, wrestling), Autumn Hawkins(Maryville University, track and field), Addison Howell(Central Methodist, cheer/stunt), Gretchen Marriott(William Woods, wrestling), Jack Romine(Central Methodist, baseball), Jesse Shannon(Missouri Valley, wrestling). Senior Addison Howell stated, “Signing day was a great experience and I’m happy I got to sign for college with my friends and family present.” Rachel Haskell, a 2022 graduate of CHS who cheers at Central Methodist University was also present to cheer on and congratulate Howell. The two will cheer together next year at Central Methodist University. This year CHS held signing on one day for every senior that was signing rather than doing individual days for each student. When asked why there was a change in format, Humphrey stated, “We decided that it was best for our students to make it all in one day, rather than making 10 -12 different days of it.” This event is enjoyed by all and shows underclassmen that hard work pays off if they are willing to put the time and patience into their sport.
