By: Miranda Gregis, Contributing Writer Baylee Beard, Centralia High School (CHS) senior, signed with Central Methodist University (CMU) on a track and field scholarship for shot put. The signing took place on Thursday, November 5, 2021, in the CHS gym. Many students and members of Beard’s family came to support this big step towards Beard’s future.
Beard, daughter of Catena and Alan Beard, participates in Volleyball, Basketball, Track, NHS, Chamber Choir, Orchestra, SKRUBS, Beta Chi Pi and FFA at CHS. This year she strives to break the school record in shot put and place first at state. Beard gained interest in track and field when she was in fourth grade and participated in track and field day. She looked up to her older brother who did track and decided to try it out for herself. Track and field has become a major part of Beard’s life. She loves to practice shot put and discus on her own time and make improvements. “I am so thankful for the support of my family, especially my parents for always pushing me to do and be better. I am also very thankful for my coaches who always challenge me,” Beard said. Beard decided to go to CMU because the campus felt like home to her. She said it reminded her of the small town feeling of Centralia. While Beard is excited to progress with her future, she will be sad to leave Centralia. “I will miss the endless support of this community and the close bonds that I have with the people here,” Beard said. Beard will participate in track and field at CMU, focusing on shot put. She plans to major in nursing and eventually become a NICU or labor and delivery nurse. Comments are closed.
