The King of Nightmares and Shadows

2/16/2022

By: Kadence Petersen and Breanna Dollens
“No no it's not your fault. I'm sure I just left it in my room.” Rising I said, “I'll be back.”
Shutting the door, and motioning for the guards not to let anyone in.   I started walking through the hallway, when the sound of paper being folded and a silky voice said, “You should really be more careful where you leave your blueprints. Anyone could just sneak in and take them.” I heard a rustle of clothes then nothing.

“Are you going to give them back, or are you too busy going places you shouldn't?”  I said, spinning around searching for her.
“How about we play a game instead. I’ll give you the blueprints if you win.” her challenge floated through the hall, bouncing off of the stone walls.
“Why don't you just give me the blueprints instead.” I said leaning against a wall, already giving up my search.
“That's no fun, and I'm bored. Here are the rules,” another rustle of clothes shifting, “One, you can't ask for help from anyone.” a knock on stone. I looked up and found a pair of my gloves, hanging off a painting.
“Now where did you get those?” I asked, reaching up to grab them.
“Two, you can only have one hint.” another rustle of clothing and a dagger whistled past my head, burying itself in the wood of the picture frame. A small piece of paper attached to it. “Three, no magic allowed. To win all you have to do is find me.”
“Last chance to just give me the blueprints back.” I said picking at my nails.
“You have until sunrise.” she whispered in my ear.
Lifting my head up to see her, but she was already gone. Her vibrant laugh filled the halls, then nothing. She was gone
This is ridiculous. I'm a king. I don't have time to play games. But what can it hurt? Smiling, I pulled the dagger from the picture frame and read my hint.
I stay awake when you sleep
I am warm on cold days
I am cold on warm days
Well Kaitleena your game begins.
