By: Anna Million, Contributor Writer Dr. Andrew Darr is directing this year’s fall play, Our Town, with the help of Mrs. Lacey Erbschloe. Our Town is a play written by Thornton Wilder that tells the story of a small town over the course of 15 years. The Stage Manager, being the main character, follows Emily Webb and George Gibbs as they grow up, fall in love and learn the joys and pains of life.
Darr said his favorite part of directing the play is, “working scenes when actors know their lines deep in their gut so that we can find those little moments of life in each exchange.” Our Town is a play Dr. Darr has wanted to direct since he first arrived in Centralia, but was unable to, due to always having such a small cast. This year however, drama had a large enough group of kids try out for the play, making Our Town possible. One member of the cast, Brandon Chick, has stated that he believes, “The play has been coming along very well.” Chick plays the part of Doc Gibbs, the sarcastic town doctor. Not only is he the town doctor, but he is the father of George Gibbs and the husband of Mrs. Gibbs. Chick believes the best part of the play is the way it shows the beauty of simplicity. Chick says his favorite part of Our Town, “is act one because the first act just shows the simple life of simple people in an ordinary town in the early 1900s.” Our Town utilizes minimum props to emphasize the simplicity of the time period. The goal is for the audience to focus on the actors, the story and to make the hometown connection. Comments are closed.
