On February 6th the Centralia Intermediate School(CIS) fifth grade students participated in what is known as Shark Tank. The students created an invention to solve modern day problems. This project ties together the current curriculum for learning engineering, inventing and the scientific process, creating business plans and working on reading and writing skills for their essays and presentations.
The CIS Shark Tank project has been around for ten years. It started as a writing assignment and has now progressed into a project that involves more hands-on work for students. Local businesses have begun to donate funds so students can create real prototypes. There were 47 groups this year. Out of these 47 groups 5-8 of them were selected to move on to be reviewed by “The Sharks” on February 14th. On February 14th, the students that moved on were judged again and the top three received a trophy. Some of the groups and inventions included: Natalee Thomas and Izzy Morris, Kyle Beckfield and Maddox Presley and Emery McCollum and Baylee Ealy. Thomas and Morris created a “Squish Surprise” that will reveal if they received a good surprise gift in a blind bag or box. Beckfield and Presley chose to innovate an “Instant Mixer” that will help with stirring and not dirtying dishes. Finally, McCollum and Ealy created “The Everything Glove” that will allow people to open doors and use their phone with gloves on. Mrs. Rebekah Kropf, fifth grade math teacher, said, “The sharks are, business owners, school administrators, school board members and members of the Centralia Historical Society.” The students presented to these sharks in the hopes that they will receive a trophy if they make it into the top three groups. Mrs. Tonya Schmidt, a high school science teacher, was one of the sharks. When asked about how the projects look she responded, “ I thought they did a really good job. The projects were all diverse and creative. It looked like the students spent a lot of time on their projects.” The winners of this year's Shark Tank were Avery Bruns and Jacie Kalinowski with, The Waker Upper 2000 in first place, Grady Smythe, Reed Chancellor, Layndin Phillipe and Wyatt Brett with Gum Flavoring and Declan Calvin with the Gely-O-Backpack in third.
