What happens when school spirit is mixed with a well loved sport?
Powder Puff football. A lively, entertaining twist where the roles get flipped and the competition gets fierce. In this fun and spirited event, girls take to the field for a game of flag football.

It’s a showcase of teamwork, class pride and good natured rivalry. On April 12, Centralia High School (CHS) student council brought that energy to life by hosting the much-anticipated Powder Puff Flag Football Tournament. Each grade level formed their own team, creating a four way battle. Powder Puff used to be an annual event that was played almost 20 years ago. To bring the spirit back to the school Morgan Dimmitt, STUCO Vice President said, “It is another fun activity we can look forward to since after winter warming there is not much besides dodgeball.”

Each game consisted of two 10 minute halves with a five minute half time. Two games were played at the same time on opposite ends of the field. Each team was allowed seven players on the field at a time and all players on the team got the chance to play.

The winners of the first round played against each other to fight for the first place title. The losers fought it out for third place. In the first round sophomores won against the seniors and the freshman won against the juniors. The overall winning team was the sophomores. CHS junior Addison Reynolds said, “It would be a good tradition if this was an annual game hosted again by STUCO.”

Mr. Justin Kephart, history teacher at CHS, took time out of his Saturday to referee the event and said, “Seeing the raw athleticism and dedication of the players and coaches,” was his favorite part. The boys had their part in the fun as they were the coaches for each grade. Senior Ian Tuggle said, “I enjoy football and thought it would be fun to coach the girls.”

Whether you were playing, coaching, cheering, or just watching, Powder Puff gave everyone a reason to come together, laugh and make some unforgettable high school memories.
