By Adyson Rackley, Contributing Writer As part of a fun and educational experience, Chance Elementary School (CES) is creating a warm atmosphere in their classrooms. Staff and students will be dressed in their coziest flannels and Camp Chance sweatshirts to further contribute to the camping theme. Camp Chance is sure to get everyone excited and spirited for the fall season.
Camp Chance is a two day event in which CES students will rotate through camp themed literacy and math stations in their classrooms. The teachers utilize the camping decor to their best ability by providing the students with tents to read in with flashlights to create an “Under the Stars” scene. The students also have a science station where they can create glow-in-the-dark slime. Camp Chance is strategically placed on the CES calendar because the event falls on the two days before Thanksgiving break. This is attributed to wanting the school attendance rate to have a positive projection. Typically those two days have a lower attendance rate but since Camp Chance was created, attendance rates have spiked. Students want to come the last two days before break because they know it’s Camp Chance. A current first grade student’s most memorable experience was, “reading Biscuit in the tent with my flashlight.” Her favorite part of her day was, “when Mrs. Amanda read to my class.” Amanda Erisman is a children’s librarian at Centralia Public Library who is attending Camp Chance this year to read to preschool. A second grader’s most-liked activity was, “taking pictures in front of the camping tent and fake campfire with my class.” Mrs. Tiffani Shuman, CES Principal created Camp Chance as a fun and lighthearted way for her students to learn. “My hope is an overall love for learning, teaching, and building relationships within the school between staff and students,” stated Shuman.
