Making a difference one outfit at a time

When Centralia High School (CHS) senior Juliana Dollens saw a need in the foster care community, she didn’t hesitate to take action.
Wanting to support the many foster children who often enter the system, Dollens organized a clothing drive to provide the children with warm and comfortable outfits to get them through these tough times. Dollens assembled students, teachers and other community members to donate clothing as a part of Beta Chi Pi, so that the foster kids at Coyote Hill and Love Columbia could have access to essentials many people take for granted.

While getting a headstart on spring cleaning, Dollens realized she had so many clothes that weren’t being put to use. After doing some research, she found Coyote Hill and Columbia Love- two organizations dedicated to supporting foster children and families. “I decided I wanted to do a clothing drive because almost everyone has clothes sitting around,” Dollens explained.

With the help of Beta Chi Pi, a CHS club, and other students in the school, Dollens was able to bring over 10 bags of clothes to these institutions. Teachers, local families and other community members took part in this clothing drive to make a difference in the foster care community.  The impact of the clothing drive went beyond simple donations. It reminded these foster children and families that they are supported.

Inspired by the success of the first drive, Dollens remained in contact with an employee at Love Columbia in order to put together another clothing drive in April. She hopes to include more items, such as light jackets and other spring and summer clothing. With the continued support of the Centralia community, Dollens could make an even greater impact the second time around. “When the second clothing drive starts, I would greatly encourage and appreciate everyone to put together some clothes. People are in need, and you can do something to help!” Dollens adds.

Dollens’ actions not only made a huge impact on Coyote Hill and Columbia Love, but also inspired students to give back to those in need. Make sure you keep an eye out for the April clothing drive so you can support and give back to the foster care community!
