By: Olivia Morris, Contributing Writer This spring, two senior students take charge of the stage, bringing their creativity and visions to life. Seniors Bailee Farrrens and Samantha Scheeler were chosen to direct Centralia High School (CHS) drama department’s one act plays. Showcasing a modern Greek tragedy and a comedy packed performance, these plays will show off the hard work and leadership of CHS student directors.
Student director Bailee Farrens will be directing “Antigone Now”. This modern twist on the classic Greek tragedy features the story of Antigone, a young woman who buries her brother, defying the law in the aftermath of a brutal war. The play is known for its take on power vs. the common man and its earth shattering ending. Farrens has participated in four drama productions in high school, her most recent role being Shelby Eatington in Steel Magnolias. “Because I am the one who ultimately decides who is in my play, I enjoy working with every single person. I see so much potential in these actors and I can not wait to see them grow and expand as actors” said Farrens. Language Arts teacher Dr. Darr and Farrens cast 11 students grades 9-12, all with many special acting abilities. Farrens has been working very closely with her cast and crew to make this play meaningful and memorable for the audience. In contrast, Samantha Scheeler has stepped up to direct this spring's one-act comedy “The Greek Mythology Olympiaganza”. This play will give you a fast-paced mythology experience that will get you roaring with laughter. The performance will take you through the most loveable Greek myths in 35 minutes, blending humor with legend. Scheeler is well known for amazing behind-the-scenes work for many of the plays and continues to share the love for theater through directing. Both Farrens and Scheeler will be working alongside CHS drama club sponsors. Darr is helping guide Farrens through the designing and making of “Antigone Now” and Language Arts teacher Mrs. Lacey Erbschloe is mentoring Scheeler for the play “The Greek Mythology Olympiaganza”. Both teachers have worked with student directors in the past but some would say that this year's directors are one of a kind. Mrs. Erbschloe stated, “Students who are successful directors are ones who are passionate about their work, they bring the energy up and are excited to rise to the challenge of leading a group. Sam and Bailee both are rising leaders and we knew they would do a great job and encourage new members to join the play. “ Don’t miss the opportunity to support your 2025 drama club student directors. Both plays are scheduled to perform March 21-23 at CHS. Tickets will be available at the door the night of. Come enjoy these unforgettable plays for a night of comedy and tragedy!
