On the crisp morning of November 16, Centralia Intermediate School (CIS) Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) committee hosted the Turkey Trot, which was sponsored by Blue Bird Bistro.
Kassi Eggemeyer and Tiffany Holloway, two of the leaders of the PTO committee put together this 5k race to help fundraise for the outdoor classroom at CIS.

The last time CIS hosted this race was in 2010. Members of the board felt as if bringing back a run would be beneficial in terms of getting everyone involved. “We wanted to add something that families could do together! Community involvement has been proven to increase student success, and we love to do fun things with our students and community members,” said Holloway. The run was 3.1 miles starting and ending at the CIS outdoor classroom. Entry fee was $25 and included a Turkey Trot t-shirt from the Glossy Goat, and the top three winners received medals.

Funds raised from the Turkey Trot contributed to the outdoor classroom, serving as a memorial for teachers as well as students’ learning. “There is a dedication to some of our staff who have passed on: Nancy Buie, Jill Gooding and Angie Ridgeway. To their families and those who loved them. To our students, it’s a place to learn about Missouri’s native plants and to our community, it’s a peaceful spot to take a break,” expressed Holloway.

There were 71 participants who walked, jogged and/or ran this year. Runners of all ages participated and the overall winner was fifth-grader Jason Timpe. The sense of gratitude reminded everyone that the true spirit of Thanksgiving lies in coming together to support one another, including the support of the school.
